Goats & Sheep

This section is currently under construction! It will house info on the different types of goats and sheep we plan to add to our farmstead.

Myotonic Goats

Myotonic goats, or more commonly known as fainting goats, are a great dual-purpose breed. This breed of goats has a condition called myotonia congenita which is what makes their muscles stiffen up when they are spooked. However, this condition also adds to their muscularity which is why they can be a great meat producing goat. This goat can be milked as well, yet will not produce as competitively as dairy specific goats.

We love this breed because of their docile demeaner, the range of colors they come in, and their spunky personalities!

Boer/Kiko Goats

Boer and Kiko goats are a meat breed of goat. These two breeds are among the most popular breeds of goats for commercial meat production. Boer are especially popular for show purposes while Kiko are more common for homesteaders. Kiko tend to be hardier than Boer goats and require less grain.

We enjoy the colors these goats come in, and appreciate their marketability as a form of farm income.

Tunis Sheep

Tunis are striking in appearance, with red faces and legs and ivory-colored fleeces. The sheep weigh 150–275 lbs. and both sexes are polled. Lambs are born with a double coat of red fiber on their bodies to protect them from the elements. Their body fleece lightens as they mature, but they retain their red legs, heads, and ears. They commonly have white spots on the top of their heads and tail tip. They have wool-free heads and legs, and they have fat tails which are often docked. The Tunis is a very docile dual-purpose breed that has been selected primarily for meat production. They are heavy milkers and make attentive mothers. Tunis sheep are good grazers and easy keepers, allowing them to thrive in forage-based production systems. They are adaptable to heat and humidity.

Our family has raised sheep for many years. The focus was primarily meat production, and we have raised breeds such as Suffolk, Polypay, and meat crosses. While we love those sheep too, the red color really drew us in to the Tunis!
